BEST challenge 2006 - The Result

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

Just got back from the Business Entrepreneur Challenge. We didn’t make it to the grand final :(

We were in the 10th position, and only the big 9 go to the next round! I am so sad about it. >< Shouldn’t go for the profit margin at the last year, I think if we go for the market share, we probably still can make it. Anyway, it’s over…there is nothing i can do about it.

But overall, I think it was a good team work. I mean…nobody blame each other for the lost and we were like encouraging each other saying that it is just a game and at least we have a half-day off (errr..or actually not, coz some of the team member have to do OT later to catch up with the work ><)

Any chance that they will change the decision and the top 10 go to the grand final?!?!? ok… maybe Not. (Rese….kenapa top 9 yah, nga top 10 ajah….tanggung benerrrrrr….) *hiks*

I need a sleep. Zzz…

tips:

I find that sleeping is a good (and cheap) way to release stress. That’s why I always go to sleep after i come back from the exam, and fall asleep during studying for the exam! or when i am going to have an interview for the next day, or when I am going to the not so-friendly client, then I’ll make sure that I have a good sleep! =P

Business Entrepreneur Challenge 2006

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

Last Monday, My team and I went for the qualifying round for the BEST entrepreneur challenge at republic polytechnic. When i was introducing our team that we’re representing EY, everybody was like "wooowww…." anyway, we just wanted to have fun and like everybody body else.. to have a half-day off!! =P

I recalled some companies that joined the qualifying round with us, among others: DBS bank, Far East insurance, Standard Chartered bank and Flextronics (i remember coz I sent confirmation for one of my client, and the Company didn’t reply to the confirmation, end up we need to do alternative procedures ><)

our team name is FALM Inc. which stands for First Asia Leading Market Insurance (in case somebody ask =P), but it’s actually come from our team members’ name (Felicia, Angela, Lisa and Michael) ^^

The game is about insurance business, we have run an insurance company and to gain cummulative highest profits and market shares for a period of 10 years. it’s a business simulation game played in about 2.5 hours.

I think the game was very exicting, coz at the first 3 years, we only got into the 8th position (out of 15 teams), and at the 4th and 5th year, we were not even in the top 10. But at the 6th year, we changed our stagegy and jump into the 6th position. at the 9th year, we are in the 5th. The pressure was on, as we need to be in the big 4 in order to go to the semifinal. So the last 10th year was the one that will determined whether we are in or not, then after we keyed-in our premium and commision, and the computer start calculating the result, guess what… we made it to the next round!!! yay! so happy about it. ^^

Tomorrow will be the semi-final and it’s 10 in the morning! hope everybody can wake up. All my team members asked me to morning call them. hmm… actually i have a problem to wake up early also, but being a good team leader..i can only say ‘Ok, sure no problem. I’ll morning call u guys on Thursday."

So, hopefully tomorrow I can wake up early and get some coffee before the competition begin. (My mind doesn’t really working in the morning).

Wish me luck (^_^)v

I am going to see dentist tomorrow. A little bit worry that I won’t understand what the doctor will say. Therefore, today I learn a new vocab regarding this dentist thingy… i.e. anesthetic, wisdom tooth, extraction, root canal, incisors, canines, premolars, molars. @@

Anyway, wish me luck tomorrow!!

Speaking about language, last night I watch ABC DJ sitcom on tv. It was funny as DJ learns Chinese( Don Jin aka DJ is an American born Chinese who is being ‘banished’ to Singapore by his father to live with a conservative Chinese family to make DJ learn about Chinese culture). And his uncle was saying “Chinese has 4 tones, different tone has different meaning” and he gave an example of “ma ma ma ma”. And DJ said “Yeah…whatever.” Then his uncle say “now, say this word in 4 tones” and give DJ a picture of car and there is a Chinese character on the card. I was wondering how to say the word in 4 tones, and guess what DJ says “car car car car” with confused expression. It’s so funny!! =D

1 degree Asia

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

Last weekend I was volunteering in a 1 degree Asia. It’s a 5-day youth leadership conference. Being with all these inspiring, positive, charismatic people is highly inspiring! I really learn a lot even though I can’t see all the things happening in the conference room ‘coz I have an usher thing to do.  During the workshop, when all the delegates already went in to the class room, I sit in to see what they are discussing.  The workshop that I attend was the one about how we as youth can speak up our mind and made a difference.

It was very tiring as I need to walk a lot from one building to other building to bring those delegates from to another session. And in the conference room, we need to distribute the handouts and questionnaires and collect them back. I walk up and down the stairs for countless time!

After the closing ceremony at night, then there was a performance done by the delegates. And even though it’s already late at night, every body still stay and didn’t feel like going home.  Some of the usher team and the delegates I met thought that I am still a student (which made me 4-5 years younger?!?!) oh no…anyway, I take it as a compliment. =P

When I was saying good bye to some ppl I met, one of the delegate’s leader say thank to me and say that he knows I didn’t get pay for doing this and he is really appreciate of what we as volunteer do. As for me, I think I gain more than the time I gave in doing this.
